Canada to Recognise Palestinian State at UN General Assembly

Canada

In a major foreign policy shift, Canada will recognise the State of Palestine during the 80th UN General Assembly in September 2025.

Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Wednesday in Ottawa, calling the move essential to protect the two-state solution.

“Canada intends to recognise the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly this September,” Carney stated.

This decision aligns Canada with France, whose President Emmanuel Macron also announced recognition of Palestine. France remains the most influential European nation to take this stance.

As expected, Israel condemned the decision, calling it a “reward for terror.”
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump labelled it “pointless.”

Despite the criticism, Carney stood firm.
He explained that Canada has always supported a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

However, he warned that hope for such a solution is rapidly fading.
“The idea of two states is being eroded before our eyes,” Carney told reporters.

He cited several reasons for the shift:

  • Israel’s failure to prevent humanitarian disaster in Gaza
  • Ongoing war with Hamas
  • Expanding settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem

Previously, world leaders believed peace would come through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
But now, according to Carney, that approach no longer works.

Therefore, Carney believes that recognising Palestine is not only justified but also urgently needed.
