UAE residents may soon enjoy a three-day weekend. The upcoming UAE public holiday marks the birthday of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The date of this Islamic holiday is expected to fall in early September 2025. It usually occurs on Rabi Al Awwal 12, the third month of the Islamic calendar.
According to predictions, Rabi Al Awwal may begin on Sunday, August 24. If so, the Prophet’s birthday will likely fall on Thursday, September 4.
However, if the Islamic month starts on Monday, August 25, then the holiday will fall on Friday, September 5. In that case, UAE residents can enjoy a long weekend from Friday to Sunday.
This potential three-day break depends on moon sightings, as the Hijri calendar follows lunar cycles. Each month begins with the new moon’s appearance.
Due to its lunar nature, the Islamic calendar shifts by about 11 days every year compared to the Gregorian calendar. Thus, holiday dates move slightly each year.
Can the UAE shift holidays?
Yes. A 2025 resolution allows certain holidays to shift to the start or end of the week. This applies only if the holiday falls on a weekend. However, this decision rests with the UAE Cabinet.
In addition, Emirate-level governments can also declare extra public holidays if needed.
Keep watching for official announcements. Authorities will confirm the exact holiday date after the moon is sighted.
