Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi has finally addressed the controversy surrounding his recent appearance at a Dubai event, which sparked strong reactions in India. Speaking to Khaleej Times in an exclusive interview, Afridi expressed surprise over the backlash and emphasized that sports should rise above political differences.
The cricketer, famously known as Boom Boom for his explosive batting style, dismissed the criticism as “uncalled for” and urged people not to politicize a casual encounter.
“Let’s not turn everything into politics,” Afridi said. “It wasn’t even a planned appearance.”
The controversy began when Afridi and fellow former cricketer Umar Gul were seen receiving a warm welcome from Indian attendees, particularly Keralites, at an inter-collegiate dance event hosted at the Pakistan Association Dubai (PAD) on May 25. The event was reportedly organized by the alumni of Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUBAA).
Coincidentally, Afridi was at PAD the same day to commemorate a Guinness World Record achieved for the most contributions to a handprint painting. He explained that some Indian guests recognized him and Gul at the venue and invited them in. “They were just excited to meet us. We enjoyed a few light moments together — that’s all it was,” he clarified.
Videos from the event quickly went viral on social media, showing Afridi being applauded by a mostly Indian crowd. The clips stirred negative reactions from certain groups in India, especially in light of ongoing political tensions between the two countries.
However, Afridi maintained a calm stance and reiterated his belief in sports diplomacy.
“I’ve always stood by the idea that cricket and sports can unite people. These reactions are unnecessary,” he said. “Cricket has always been a bridge — not a barrier — between nations.”
Afridi also runs a fitness center at the PAD facility and has remained an active advocate of cross-border harmony through sports.
